artist statement We want to re-examine public space and to create work which explores our relationship with the space we inhabit. We wish to de-center and disrupt the accepted norms, thereby forcing viewers to question the unspoken boundaries, and our roles within social, political and cultural spheres. Ultimately, we aim to create an interactive public forum which will foster a dialogue regarding issues in our city and our everyday lives. Our work is part environmental sculpture—drawing on the tradition of artists such as Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson—and part contemporary street art; a conflation of forms that explores the complex relationship between the natural and the manmade. To minimize the creation of unnecessary waste, most of our materials are biodegradable, recycled, or reused. Your questions, comments, opinions welcome at urbanmeme@gmail.com.
We have two projects in the works right now and plans for a new website. Unfortunately these won’t take shape until December. It may have something to do with over committing, 30 day yoga challenges and exams. Nonetheless, keep posted, we’ll be dropping hints and publishing our artist statements once the craze dies down a little.
Sorry to those who commented. We’ve been having some problems with the set up and it erased everything. That said, it should be fixed and ready to go.
“While the project is conceptually simple — get a bunch of trash containers, clean and seal them, fill with water, jump in — there were a lot of details to finesse. The coarse edges inside the containers were filed down, and underneath the liners, the bottoms were covered in sand, for soft landings. Tightly packed sandbags double as benches along the walls, and pool toys and kid-friendliness provide an intentional counterpoint to the neighborhood grit.”
